Over the past two months I have been working on a project which I am particularly proud to share with you. The exhibition is called “MONTRÉAL, TERRE D’ACCUEIL“and is presented as part of the United Nations WORLD DAY FOR CULTURAL DIVERSITY FOR DIALOGUE AND DEVELOPMENT.This exhibition aims to highlight the exceptional work of community organizations in Montreal working with newcomers.
Through this project, I discovered my city in a different light. Being born and raised here, I must admit not having personally experienced the feelings that many immigrants may feel when settling to a new land. However, being of Haitian origin, I know and understand this reality because my mother had her go through this immigration process. Throughout meetings during the project, I experienced several moments of “déjà vu”. I was raised with the combination of Haitian and Quebec culture and values. This reality has greatly influenced my childhood and still continues to influence my perception of my city.
The challenge in this project was to showcase the amazing work of all the organizations I worked with while respecting my artistic approach of creation. It took me several days to figure out what I wanted to put forward. I tried to find the thread that would coherently bring together the 13 organizations in 28 photographs. The intention of the project is to visually represent the work of those organizations in a beautiful way, so I had to focus my energy in that direction. Through the composition of my photographs, I wanted to bring out the relationship of mutual trust between the new arrivals and those who help them on a daily basis. As music is an important part of my creative process, I found Corneille’s song MARCHAND DE RÊVES. The emotions that emerge from this song have greatly inspired me.
Montreal is a city that is in constant evolution. It is obvious that the reality of “Diversity” will be different in 50 years. While staying in the shade might feel good, exposure to the sun is much nicer. That’s why I congratulate the CONSEIL INTERCULTUREL DE MONTRÉAL (CIM) for initiating this project. The exhibition is free from 18 to 26 May 2016 in the HALL D’HONNEUR DE L’HÔTEL DE VILLE DE MONTRÉAL. Below is the facebook link event MONTRÉAL, TERRE D’ACCUEIL. Enjoy the exhibition!
